San Jose Sharks mocked after dropping late lead against Vegas

The San Jose Sharks played their season opener at home last night against the Vegas Golden Knights. Late in the third period, the Sharks were up 3–2, but two huge mistakes cost them the game. Now, fans are mocking the Sharks.

No one expects the San Jose Sharks to be Stanley Cup contenders this season. They have a young, talented core that is supposed to compete at the highest level in a few years. Analysts and insiders have been speculating about how good they could be a few years from now—especially if they manage to draft generational talent Gavin McKenna in the 2026 draft.

Two huge mistakes

But as for this season, the Sharks are not expected to make the playoffs. During last night’s season opener against a serious Cup contender, the Vegas Golden Knights, the Sharks led 3–2 late in the third period. Then, they made two big mistakes that cost them the two points.
First, William Eklund missed an open net, and on the immediate counterattack, Jack Eichel scored on a breakaway, tying the game with just 1:34 left.
Then, in overtime, newly acquired goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic came way too far out of his crease and deflected the puck right to Shea Theodore, who passed it to Reilly Smith—who scored into the empty net to end the game.
