Red Wings players’ heartfelt gesture for Mickey Redmond

Longtime Detroit Red Wings broadcaster Mickey Redmond is stepping away from hockey for a while to undergo surgery. Following last night’s game, Red Wings players took a moment to wish Redmond all the best.

Mickey Redmond began his career as a forward with the Montreal Canadiens, where he won two Stanley Cups in 1968 and 1969. However, he is most closely associated with the Red Wings, the team he was traded to in 1971. During the 1972–73 season, Redmond became the first player in franchise history to score 50 goals. He also served as team captain the following year.

Mickey Redmond an icon in Detroit

Unfortunately, a back injury forced Redmond to retire at just 28 years old. Since then, he has become a true Red Wings icon through his work as a broadcaster. In 2011, Redmond received the Hockey Hall of Fame’s Foster Hewitt Memorial Award, which honors television and radio broadcasters who make outstanding contributions to their profession and to the game of ice hockey. Since 2022, he has also been a member of the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame.

Will undergo surgery

Now 78, Redmond will miss some time behind the microphone as he undergoes a scheduled cervical spine fusion surgery. He is expected to return sometime after the Olympic break. Sunday’s broadcast marked his final appearance for the foreseeable future, as the Red Wings defeated the Ottawa Senators 4–3 on an overtime winner by Alex DeBrincat.
