Ivan Demidov is one of the most talked-about young players heading into the 2025–26 season. But last night, the Montreal Canadiens forward was the victim of a nasty slash from Nick Cousins, leaving both fans and players outraged.
Demidov was drafted fifth overall by the Montreal Canadiens in 2024. He spent the 2024–25 season with SKA St. Petersburg in the KHL, and after their elimination, he joined the Canadiens. In seven games—including five in the playoffs—he recorded four points, making a strong first impression on teammates, coaches, and analysts.

Ivan Demidov slashed by Nick Cousins
This preseason, Demidov has continued to impress. But in last night’s preseason matchup against the Ottawa Senators, he was slashed by forward Nick Cousins. Carrying the puck into the offensive zone before dishing it off, Demidov was struck late on his right arm by Cousins.
The 19-year-old was in visible pain afterward. According to Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis, he was being evaluated following the game.
”It’s not a hockey play”
“There’s no need for that. It’s an exhibition game, both teams are trying to get ready for a long season. I don’t think there’s any need for that in the game,” St. Louis said.
Teammate Kirby Dach also voiced his frustration:
“A strange play. It’s not a hockey play. I think if he did that out in the street, he’d be in a lot of trouble.”
Upset fans
Fans quickly took to social media to vent their anger:
“Embarrassing night for the Senators organization,” one fan wrote on X.
“The NHL has to be reviewing this. The run and then the slash—that’s more than a two-minute call,” another posted.
“Definitely deserves a suspension,” a third added.
