Cole Caufield’s response after scoring 40th goal

Cole Caufield became the first Montreal Canadiens player in 32 years to reach 40 goals on Tuesday. Afterwards, he delivered a hilarious response when asked if he was aiming for 50 goals next.

“41.” That’s what Caufield said when asked about his historic feat. With his overtime winner against the Boston Bruins, he became the first Canadien to score 40 goals since Vincent Damphousse in the 1993–94 season.

Cole Caufield’s 40th goal

Damphousse finished that season with 40 goals, while Caufield still has 15 games left to further improve his numbers.
“Obviously it’s pretty special, but it says a lot about where the team is headed, and it’s the right direction,” Caufield told NHL.com after the game. “A lot of work goes into that—great teammates and coaches—so it’s obviously a team sport, and that doesn’t happen without the guys in the room. I’m just lucky enough to be a part of this group.”

Perfect response

Caufield was also interviewed on the ice immediately after the game, prompting the entire Bell Centre to burst out laughing.
“What’s after 40? 50?” he was asked. After a few seconds of thought, Caufield grinned and replied, “41,” sending everyone into laughter.
Online, fans are also finding his answer funny.
”Brilliant. Goal scorer mentality,” one fan wrote on X.
I died laughing when he said it on tv,” another one wrote.
”Legend,” a third one wrote.
The Canadiens currently hold a playoff position and will face the Detroit Red Wings next.
