Canadiens team records: every all-time leader in the NHL’s most decorated club

No franchise in hockey has a longer record book than Montreal’s, and none has more in it that will never be touched again.

Guy Lafleur’s 1,246 points have stood since 1985. Maurice Richard’s 544 goals have stood since 1960. And George Hainsworth’s goaltending records from the late 1920s belong to a version of the sport that no longer exists: 22 shutouts in a 44-game season, at 0.92 goals against per game.

But two of the single-season records are genuinely in reach, and both belong to players on the current roster.

Who has scored the most goals for the Canadiens?

Maurice Richard, with 544.

Richard retired in 1960, having been the first player in NHL history to reach 500 goals. Guy Lafleur, second on the club list with 518, is the only other Canadien to pass 500, and no active player is close.

Who has the most points in Canadiens history?

Guy Lafleur, with 1,246 over 14 seasons, and his 728 assists are the club record too.

Lafleur’s 728 assists are the club record, and both marks have stood since 1985.

Henri Richard also holds the games record, with more than 1,250 games across 20 seasons between 1955 and 1975. He also won eleven Stanley Cups as a player, which no one in NHL history has matched.

Four of these eight come from the same two seasons. The 1976-77 and 1977-78 Canadiens are the most dominant pair of years any club has had, and Lafleur’s 136 points, Shutt’s and Lafleur’s 60 goals, and Robinson’s 85 from defense all date from them.

Cournoyer’s 1966-67 is the oddity: he scored 25 goals that season, and 20 of them came on the power play.

The two Swedish rookies who share the rookie record, Näslund and Dahlin, arrived three years apart in the 1980s and posted the same total.

The 1976-77 season is the best any NHL team has had. 60 wins, 132 points, and eight losses in 80 games, and all three are league records as well as club records.

The 28-game unbeaten run the following season, 23 wins and five ties, is the second-longest in NHL history behind Philadelphia’s 35 in 1979-80.

Two rows need their schedules attached. The 43 goals allowed in 1928-29 came in a 44-game season and cannot be compared to a modern year, which is why the 70-game figure is given alongside it. The .260 in 1939-40 came in a 48-game season.

Who holds the Canadiens goaltending records?

George Hainsworth and Carey Price, from opposite ends of the century, can’t really be compared.

Save percentage, seasonCarey Price.9332014-15

Hainsworth’s 1928-29 season is the most extreme goaltending season in any club’s record book. 22 shutouts in 44 games means he kept a clean sheet in half of them, and his 22 is still the NHL single-season record. The 0.92 average comes from a season when the forward pass was not yet allowed in the attacking zone.

Price’s records are modern, and his 361 wins are the career mark. His .933 in 2014-15 is the best save percentage in club history, but only within the era in which save percentage was recorded at all — the statistic did not exist for Hainsworth, Georges Vézina or Bill Durnan, so the comparison cannot be made.

How many Stanley Cups have the Canadiens won?

24, and the number needs one qualification every time it is used.

23 of them came after the NHL was founded in 1917. One, in 1916, was won in the National Hockey Association, before the NHL existed. An unqualified “24 NHL championships” is wrong.

The 23 NHL Cups run from 1924 to 1993, and no other franchise has more than half as many. Two seasons in the record books look like Cups and are not: in 1919 Montreal won the NHL title but the Final against Seattle was abandoned during the influenza pandemic, and no Cup was awarded, and in 1925 the club won the NHL final and then lost the Cup Final to Victoria.

Which records could fall next?

Two, and both are single-season marks held by the 1976-77 and 1977-78 teams.

Lane Hutson is closing on Larry Robinson’s 85 points by a defenseman. He put up 78 in his second full season, and he has already matched the 66 assists Robinson recorded in the record year. A normal step forward takes it.

Cole Caufield is the closest any Canadien has come to the 60-goal mark in decades. He reached 51 in 2025-26. It needs a career year rather than a step forward, but it is not far-fetched.

Everything else is settled. The career records are out of reach by several hundred points, the goaltending marks belong to retired players, and the rookie record can only fall to a future rookie.

Where does this data come from?

Team and season figures come from the NHL’s records database and were cross-checked against Hockey-Reference’s franchise career leaders and Wikipedia’s list of club records. The career goal, point, and win records match on all three.
