Dylan Strome is now a part of hockey history forever. The Washington Capitals forward picked up an assist on Alex Ovechkin’s record-breaking 895th career goal, and after the game, Ovechkin signed his hat to thank him. Now, his special message to his teammate has been revealed—and fans think it’s simply awesome.
Tom Wilson has been teammates with Ovechkin for nearly a dozen years. It was only fitting that he—the forward who won the Cup with Ovechkin in 2018—had the primary assist on the goal that put The Great Eight alone at the top of the NHL’s all-time goal list.
Ovechkin scored twice against the Chicago Blackhawks this past weekend to tie Wayne Gretzky for the most goals in league history. Then, against the New York Islanders on Sunday, he netted the goal that moved him past The Great One—taking a pass from the top of the right face-off circle from Wilson. In the NHL record books, Wilson’s name will sit next to Ovechkin’s—but so will Dylan Strome’s.
Alex Ovechkin’s special message
Strome has felt the pressure all year. He really wanted to be part of the historic moment. And he wasn’t just on the ice when it happened—he got an assist on the goal, too.
“I’m happy for ‘Stromer,'” Ovechkin said postgame. “Probably Stromer is the happiest guy right now in the whole world because he’s crazy about the stats—he knows everything—and he just wants to be in that history.”
There was a lot of signing for Ovechkin to do after the game. Everyone wanted a piece of memorabilia, and Ovechkin obliged, signing plenty of pucks and sticks. But he also had a special signing for Strome, who helped him make history. Strome shared a picture on social media of a cap signed by Ovechkin. But it wasn’t just an autograph—Ovechkin had added a special note for his teammate:
“To Zinni. Thx for 2nd assist.”
