Junior Hockey Phenomenon Shares Goal Scoring Record With NHL Superstar

The Rimouski Océanic of the QMJHL have many reasons to smile. Their club sits second in the league in points, they are one win away from 40, and now they have another connection to Sidney Crosby on their hands.

The jump from 26-wins to their current 39 has been one of the more talked about headlines in the city of just under 50,000 residents. However, 16-year-old Alexis Lafrenière has been creating chatter not only in the league or province, but in the country.

Lafrenière ended February on a wild note. With 41-goals under his belt this season (in 54 games), Lafrenière became the first 16-year-old to score 40 goals in the QMJHL since Sidney Crosby during the 2004 season. Even more fitting is that Crosby played for Rimouski when he achieved that accolade.

Something must be in the water in Rimouski for that franchise to churn out another high-end scorer at only 16-years of age. It’ll be fun to follow his junior career and hopefully professional, as the kid clearly has exceptional talent.
