Everything you need to know about Easton Cowan

Easton Cowan is a Canadian winger for the Toronto Maple Leafs and a rare prospect who arrived in the NHL with a championship already in hand. Easton Cowan was taken 28th overall in the 2023 draft, stayed in junior for two more seasons, and won the Calder Cup with the Toronto Marlies in June 2026. He led the Memorial Cup in scoring twice before that.

Is Easton Cowan on the Maple Leafs?

Yes, and not as a call-up. Easton Cowan wears No. 53 and has been a Maple Leafs roster player since his debut in October 2025, after two seasons in which Toronto left him in junior. He opened 2026-27 on a checking line with Nick Paul and Colton Sissons, scored a power-play goal in a 2-1 win over the New York Islanders on 30 September 2026, and has moved up the lineup when the club has needed it. He takes shifts on both the power play and the penalty kill.

Head coach Jim Hiller, who took the job in June 2026, has been plain about what the job is. “He has tremendous skill, but where he can help us best is by being a puck hound,” Hiller said in September 2026.

Completed seasons only.

In 60 playoff games in the OHL, Easton Cowan scored 96 points (1.60 per game), compared with 1.26 per game in 175 regular-season games. Those four junior postseasons brought 32 goals and 64 assists for London, and he led the OHL playoffs in scoring in both 2024 and 2025.

His own account of it predates the record. “Similar to last year, I felt when the games got bigger, I got better,” he said in July 2025, before his first NHL season.

What happened in Easton Cowan’s rookie season?

It went up and down and ended up. Easton Cowan made his NHL debut on 13 October 2025, picked up his first point the following night against Nashville, and scored his first goal in his ninth game, at Philadelphia on 1 November 2025. Two days later, he was promoted to Toronto’s first power-play unit, and within the week he was in the AHL because Scott Laughton returned from injury; the club was at the roster limit, and he was the only forward it could move without exposing him to waivers.

He missed 16 of Toronto’s games that season, five while he was assigned to the Marlies in November and the rest as a healthy scratch. He also finished the season on the first line with John Tavares and William Nylander, averaging 18:26 of ice time from 20 March 2026 onwards. “He had a hell of a game tonight,” then head coach Craig Berube said after the Philadelphia game on 1 November 2025.

Is Easton Cowan a center?

No, he plays the wing. The NHL’s own register lists Easton Cowan as a right wing, EliteProspects lists him as a center or winger, and PuckPedia lists center and left wing, but every Toronto line he has appeared on has had somebody else in the middle: Nick Paul, Colton Sissons or John Tavares. He has played both left and right wing.

What did Easton Cowan win in the OHL?

Close to everything on offer. Easton Cowan won the J. Ross Robertson Cup with the London Knights in 2024 and again in 2025, the Memorial Cup in 2025, the Red Tilson Trophy as the OHL’s most outstanding player in 2024, and the Wayne Gretzky 99 Award as playoff MVP in the same year. He also took the Ed Chynoweth Trophy as the Memorial Cup’s leading scorer in both 2024 and 2025, was named the 2025 tournament’s most valuable player, and made its all-star team alongside Gavin McKenna.

His longest junior streak is not in the record books. He recorded a point in 65 consecutive games across the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons, the last 36 of one and the first 29 of the next, and he passed the 55-game run Doug Gilmour put together for the Cornwall Royals in 1982-83 when he reached 56 games on 6 December 2024. Because the streak spans two seasons, the OHL does not recognize it. “Congratulations Easton Cowan such an impressive streak. Keep going bud!” Gilmour wrote the night Cowan passed him.

Did Easton Cowan win the Calder Cup?

Yes, in his first professional postseason. Easton Cowan was sent to the Toronto Marlies in April 2026, and they won the Calder Cup on 19 June 2026, taking the final series 4-1 against the Chicago Wolves and the deciding game 4-3, as the Marlies reported. He had three points in that last game and 18 points in 22 playoff games, and goaltender Artur Akhtyamov won the playoff MVP award.
“I mean anytime you’re playing pro in the playoffs, it helps a lot,” he said of the run on 30 September 2026.

What has Easton Cowan done for Canada?

Two World Junior Championships, and both ended the same way. Easton Cowan played five games at the 2024 tournament in Gothenburg for a goal and an assist, and five games at the 2025 tournament in Ottawa for a goal and two assists; Canada lost in the quarter-final to Czechia both times. He has never played for the senior national team.

What is Easton Cowan’s contract?

A three-year entry-level deal signed in August 2023. PuckPedia puts his cap hit at $900,000 for 2026-27 on an $850,000 base salary, with no signing bonus that season and restricted free agency in 2028. Because he stayed in junior in 2023-24 and in 2024-25, the contract slid twice: it was signed in 2023, but its three paid seasons are 2025-26, 2026-27 and 2027-28.

Does Easton Cowan have a girlfriend?

Yes, though the detail comes secondhand. TSN reported on 18 October 2026 that Easton Cowan ordered chocolate milk on a first date with his current girlfriend, and that his teammates took to it with enthusiasm. Asked who was giving him the hardest time about it, he said, “a lot of people.” Her name has not been made public.
