Germany hosts the 2027 IIHF World Championship from 13 to 30 May 2027, with games in Mannheim and Düsseldorf and a one-off opening game at Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen.

Canada and the United States play each other on Friday 14 May at 2:20 p.m. ET in Düsseldorf, the first full day of the tournament, according to the IIHF’s official schedule. Finland are the defending champions.

Where is the 2027 IIHF World Championship?

Germany. Group A plays in Mannheim at SAP Arena, and Group B plays in Düsseldorf at the Düsseldorf Dome, which also hosts both semifinals, the bronze medal game and the gold medal game. The opening game has been moved out to Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen, a football stadium with 61,574 seats.

When is the 2027 IIHF World Championship?

The tournament runs from Thursday 13 May to Sunday 30 May 2027. There are no games on 26 and 28 May, which the organizers set aside as travel days before the quarterfinals and the semifinals. The gold medal game is on Sunday 30 May at 20:20 local time, which is 2:20 p.m. ET and 11:20 a.m. PT.

What is the schedule for the 2027 IIHF World Championship?

Every group game and quarterfinal starts at 12:20, 16:20, or 20:20 local time, which is 6:20 a.m., 10:20 a.m., or 2:20 p.m. ET. Germany is six hours ahead of the Eastern Time Zone in May. These are the group games for Canada and the United States, all in Düsseldorf.

The USA’s last group game, against Denmark, starts at 3:20 a.m. on the West Coast. It is the only game either team plays in the noon local slot. Canada has four of its seven games in the afternoon ET slot. The United States has five.

The quarterfinals are on Thursday 27 May at 10:20 a.m. and 2:20 p.m. ET. The semifinals are on Saturday 29 May at 8:20 a.m. and 12:20 p.m. ET, and the bronze medal game is on Sunday 30 May at 9:20 a.m. ET.

What are the groups at the 2027 IIHF World Championship?

Group A, in Mannheim: Germany, Switzerland, Finland, Sweden, Latvia, Austria, Slovenia and Ukraine. Group B, in Düsseldorf: Canada, the United States, Czechia, Slovakia, Denmark, Norway, Kazakhstan and Hungary.

The groups are not drawn at random. The IIHF seeds the 16 teams from its world ranking in a snake pattern. Ukraine and Kazakhstan are in the field after winning promotion from Division I Group A in 2026. Each team plays seven group games.

How much are 2027 IIHF World Championship tickets?

Day packages start at EUR 69 in Düsseldorf and EUR 79 in Mannheim, and each covers every game at that venue on that day. They went on general sale on 11 September 2026, after a 48-hour presale for registered fans. Every ticket includes public transport. Standing-room tickets are available on days when Germany plays, along with a family offer with reduced prices for children aged six to 17, and a limit of six tickets per account on Germany days and ten on other days.

Tickets for the opening game in Gelsenkirchen went on sale separately on 16 July 2026.

How can I watch the 2027 IIHF World Championship?

The IIHF has not yet published its broadcaster list for 2027. In 2026, it listed NHL Network as the rights holder in the United States, and TSN and RDS in Canada. Viewers in countries without a rights holder could stream games on IIHF.TV. This section will be updated when the 2027 list is published.

Who won the 2026 IIHF World Championship?

Finland. Konsta Helenius scored at 10:42 of overtime to beat Switzerland 1-0 in Zurich on 31 May 2026. Helenius also scored the winning goal in the semifinal against Canada. Switzerland has now lost all five gold medal games it has played since 2013. Norway beat Canada 3-2 in overtime for the bronze, Norway’s first medal at a World Championship.

Do NHL players play in the IIHF World Championship?

Yes, but only some of them. The tournament is played during the Stanley Cup playoffs, so national teams pick from players whose NHL clubs have missed the playoffs or been knocked out. That is why a team’s roster can grow during the tournament, as more NHL clubs are eliminated.

Is the IIHF World Championship every year?

Yes. The men’s World Championship is played every spring, including in Olympic years. The 2020 tournament in Switzerland was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
