Kyle Dubas names the trade he still regrets

Kyle Dubas has made a name for himself as a general manager who doesn’t shy away from bold trades. But there is one trade he still kicks himself over whenever he sees the player on the ice. That player is Mason Marchment.

It’s almost hard to believe that Kyle Dubas is still only 40 years old. He has already spent over a decade working in the NHL with the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Starting as an OHL scout and working his way up to general manager of two of the league’s biggest franchises can only be described as a success—although he is still missing a Stanley Cup.

Kyle Dubas regrets this trade

Dubas has never been afraid to make moves that raise eyebrows among fans. But there is one trade he regrets. Appearing as a guest on the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast, Dubas recalled the deal.
“The one that I regret most is Mason Marchment. We traded Mason to Florida. He had come up with us the whole way. We signed him to a minor league deal after his overage season in major junior. He came so far, helped us win a Calder Cup in 2018, and was a huge part of that. He made his NHL debut the next year, which was awesome,” Dubas said on the podcast and continued.

“And then, you know, he was 25, and we moved him to Florida. We needed skill at that point—we had some guys out of the lineup. A younger, skilled player came in, Denis Malgin. Every time I see Mason play, no matter where he is, I just kick myself because we really needed that style of player. The competitiveness, the ability to score, to get under people’s skin. The physicality, the ability to get to the net. I always kick myself about that one,” Dubas added.
