Bob Probert’s penalty minutes against every NHL team

Bob Probert took more penalty minutes against the Toronto Maple Leafs than against any other team: 383 in 65 games. Across 16 NHL seasons with Detroit and Chicago, Probert faced 30 of today’s 32 franchises and finished with 3,300 penalty minutes in 935 games.

The full breakdown is below, including something no public database publishes — how many of those penalties were majors, team by team.

Which team did Bob Probert take the most penalty minutes against?

The Toronto Maple Leafs. Probert took 383 penalty minutes in 65 games against Toronto, a rate of 5.89 per game against a career rate of 3.53. That is his highest total and his highest rate against any opponent. It also included 27 majors, seven misconducts, six game misconducts and two of the seven match penalties of his career.

Detroit and Toronto were Norris Division rivals for Probert’s entire time with the Red Wings, which put them in front of each other seven or eight times a season through his most penalized years.

Was there a team Bob Probert never fought?

Yes — the Ottawa Senators. Probert played 12 regular-season games against Ottawa and took no majors at all, along with just 8 penalty minutes. Since every fight draws a fighting major, zero majors means Probert never once dropped the gloves against them.

Ottawa is the only franchise on that list. Probert took at least one major against all 29 other teams he faced, including four in 18 games against Nashville and one in his four games against the Minnesota Wild.

Buffalo comes closest to joining Ottawa. Probert played 25 games against the Sabres for 83 penalty minutes — a fairly typical total — but just one major in all of them.

Which team did Bob Probert take the most majors against?

Toronto again, with 27. But the highest rate belongs to the Philadelphia Flyers: 11 majors in 26 games, or 0.423 per game, marginally ahead of Toronto’s 0.415 and Chicago’s 0.389.

Probert’s career rate was 0.255 majors per game. The five teams he exceeded it most against, at 20 games or more, were Philadelphia, Toronto, Chicago, the New York Rangers and Los Angeles.

How many of Probert’s penalties were actually fights?

Fewer than his reputation suggests. Probert took 964 career penalties: 644 minors, 238 majors, 42 misconducts, 33 game misconducts and 7 match penalties. Minors outnumber majors by nearly three to one, so the large majority of his penalty record is ordinary hockey infractions — hooking, roughing, cross-checking, high-sticking.
