Martin Necas chirps Team Canada ahead of quarterfinal

Team Canada enters the knockout stage of the Olympics with a quarterfinal matchup against Czechia. Ahead of the game, Czech forward Martin Necas delivered a sharp chirp toward Team Canada.

Necas was drafted 12th overall in the 2017 NHL Draft by the Carolina Hurricanes, where he established himself as a reliable point producer. In January 2025, however, he was traded to the Colorado Avalanche.

Great start for the Avalanche

Since arriving in Colorado, Necas has taken off. This season, he has recorded 22 goals and 40 assists in 52 games. Representing Team Czechia at the Olympics, he has added three goals and four assists in four games, placing him third in tournament scoring so far.
After defeating Denmark 3–2 in the qualifying round, Czechia now faces gold-medal favorite Team Canada in the quarterfinal. The teams also met in the preliminary round, where Canada won 5–0. Most analysts expect Wednesday’s game to end in a comfortable Canadian victory.

But Necas sees it differently. Speaking to reporters, he jokingly addressed the upcoming challenge—and even chirped his opponents a bit.
“We let them win the first one because we knew we weren’t going to win two in a row against Canada,” Necas said.
Fans online are now praising him for his sense of humor ahead of the big game.
“Now that’s an all-timer,” one fan wrote on X.
“This is a phenomenal quote, and I hope we beat them gently,” another added.
“I love it when professionals allow themselves to use some humor! More should try it. Should be a good game,” a third wrote.
Team Canada vs. Czechia begins at 10:40 a.m.
