On Monday night, the Detroit Red Wings organization retired Sergei Fedorov’s jersey in a grand ceremony ahead of the team’s game against the Carolina Hurricanes. During his speech, Fedorov shared some truly heartwarming words about Steve Yzerman — moments that have moved fans to tears.

Sergei Fedorov was a key piece of the Detroit Red Wings during the 1990s and early 2000s, an era that saw the franchise lift the Stanley Cup four times: in 1997, 1998, 2002, and 2008.

Steve Yzerman as general manager

Throughout Fedorov’s 13 seasons with the Red Wings, Steve Yzerman served as the team’s captain. After his playing career, Yzerman went on to serve as general manager and vice president of hockey operations for the Red Wings, with a nine-year stint with the Tampa Bay Lightning in between.

Praised Fedorov in his speech

Yzerman attended the Fedorov ceremony and delivered a speech in which he offered high praise for his former teammate.
“December 26, 1996. A memorable Boxing Day game at Joe Louis Arena against Washington. Final score: Capitals 4, Sergei 5. We could’ve dressed a goalie and the Russian Five and still would’ve won 5–4,” Yzerman said.

Sergei Fedorov’s acceptance speech

When it was time for Sergei Fedorov to take the podium, he brought the crowd — and Yzerman himself — to tears with his words.
“The best captain I ever played with, Steve Yzerman. Every day, I saw his leadership, his work ethic, his dedication to winning, and his skills on and off the ice. He was truly our leader. Detroit, you are so lucky to have Stevie as your GM. I’m telling you, it’s only a matter of time until the Red Wings lift another Stanley Cup here in Hockeytown,” Fedorov said.
The Red Wings went on to win the game 4–3 in overtime.
