Canadiens surprise Lane Hutson with celebration after new deal

On Monday, Lane Hutson signed an eight-year contract extension with the Montreal Canadiens. During practice following the signing, Hutson’s teammates threw him a small celebration that was caught on camera — and fans are loving it.

Hutson had an outstanding rookie season in the NHL last year, tallying 66 points in 82 games and winning the Calder Trophy. Yesterday, he was rewarded handsomely, signing an eight-year extension worth a total of $70.8 million, which gives him an average annual salary of $8.85 million. The contract will begin in the 2026–2027 season and run through the 2033–2034 season.

Team-friendly contract

The deal is considered very team-friendly, especially given the projected increase in NHL salary cap space over the coming years and the fact that the Canadiens have a young core, with many players expected to sign new contracts soon.
“With this contract, Lane just told us that he likes playing in Montreal and that he wants the Canadiens to be in a position to win. We’re very happy to keep him here with us. We’re lucky to have him, and to have him on a long-term basis,” Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes told NHL.com following the signing.

Head coach Martin St-Louis had Hutson take an extra lap during practice while he informed the rest of the team about the new deal. As Hutson finished the lap, he was jumped by his teammates in celebration. The video of the moment quickly went online, and fans were thrilled.
“This team, I have never seen anything like it in sports. They are so close-knit you’d swear this team had 24 brothers playing for them,” one fan wrote.
“This team is unreal. Can’t wait to watch them for years to come!” another fan wrote.
“Those guys just love the hell out of each other. Great to see excellent team chemistry,” a third fan added.
