The Edmonton Oilers were unable to turn the Stanley Cup Final around and lost 5–1 in Game 6. After watching the Florida Panthers celebrate their second consecutive Cup win, Oilers captain Connor McDavid spoke to the media. Now, fans are saying McDavid took a jab at the Oilers’ coaching staff…
The Edmonton Oilers became the first team to lose back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals since the Boston Bruins fell to the Montreal Canadiens in 1977 and 1978. After conceding two goals in the first period and another in the second, the Oilers weren’t able to push back against a superb Florida team, led by Sam Reinhart, who scored four goals in the game.
Connor McDavid’s first words
For Connor McDavid, the loss was a total heartbreak, as he became the only player in NHL history to record nine straight 90-point seasons without winning a Stanley Cup. When speaking to the media, McDavid praised the Panthers—but also appeared to take a shot at his own team.
“They’re a heck of a team. They’re Stanley Cup champions back-to-back for a reason. We were never able to generate any momentum up the ice. We kept f*cking trying the same thing over and over again, just banging our heads against the wall,” McDavid told reporters.
Fans reaction
Now, fans are interpreting McDavid’s comments about “trying the same thing over and over again” as a possible jab at the coaches.
“He seemed to imply Knoblauch didn’t do enough to change the game plan when Florida kept stifling their play,” one fan wrote on Reddit.
“Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but that seems like some pretty harsh words for the coaching staff,” another added.
“Given that’s an accurate assessment of what happened, imho, does it mean they could try a new coach?” a third fan asked.
