Cam Neely is one of the biggest icons in Boston Bruins history. As one of the best goal scorers of his generation and a notoriously tough opponent, Neely played a major role for the Bruins during the 1980s and 1990s. But Cam Neely was also an actor—and he appeared in some very big films. At one point, he even got acting lessons from Jim Carrey’s butt.
Neely was drafted ninth overall by the Vancouver Canucks in 1983. However, it was his ten seasons with the Boston Bruins that earned him the respect his name commands in the hockey world today. Scoring 694 points in 726 NHL games while spending 1,241 minutes in the penalty box shows just how important Neely was to the Bruins during those years. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2005, ten years after retiring due to ongoing hip issues. Fortunately, Neely already had another career taking shape.
Cam Neely in Dumb and Dumber
After a few smaller roles, Cam Neely landed a part in the blockbuster Dumb and Dumber, starring alongside Jeff Daniels and, of course, Jim Carrey. Neely played—believe it or not—a tough guy named Sea Bass. In one scene, Neely was supposed to beat up Jim Carrey inside a bathroom stall. However, he couldn’t quite act surprised enough, so the director kept doing take after take.
Jim Carrey dropped his pants
That’s when Jim Carrey stepped in to help Cam Neely.
“I’m like, I got Jim Carrey sitting on a milk crate—he’s making $10 million or whatever the hell he got for that movie. I’m wasting everybody’s time. So, I pulled Jim aside. I go, ‘Listen, Jim, please just bear with me—I’m really struggling here.’ He goes, ‘Ah, Cam, don’t worry about it. I’ve had some scenes that have taken 50 takes—just relax.’ Next take, I kick the door open and he’s mooning me, so they got the shot,” Cam Neely told the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast in 2022.
