Wayne Gretzky will always be The Great One. It was a privilege to play with him, and it doesn’t matter that he retired back in 1999. If a player gets to be on the ice at the same time as Gretzky, you can guess that it’s special. No matter how skilled you are.
Wayne Gretzky is the record holder in the NHL in assists, and points. And he’s undoubtedly the most skillful player there ever was.
Wayne Gretzky and the Coyotes
Following his active career, Gretzky became the part-owner of the Phoenix Coyotes. In 2005, he became the head coach of the team. To play in the Phoenix Coyotes during those years was special. Just imagine having the best player in history standing in the booth, giving you orders and tips on how to get better.
And that was the case for Keith Yandle. In Gretzky’s early years in coaching, Yandle wasn’t a regular in the Coyotes lineup, but they still had their moments.
Funny Keith Yandle story
They’re now both working for TNT. One time, Yandle shared an awesome story of when coach Wayne Gretzky roasted him with a legendary burn.
”He was getting ready for his fantasy camp. I was a young kid and we were out there skating. You know, the healthy scratches were skating with the coaches,” Yandle said.
”Me and Wayne go on a two-on-one and I get the puck. I look him off, look him off, and then shoot it. We get into the line and he goes, ’Hey kid, did you have a TV when you grew up?’ I go, ’Yeah, why?’ And he goes, ’You might want to slide that one over next time.’”
”He’s The Great One on and off the ice. That’s why he’s the best.”
