Brian Bellows: Where is he now?

Brian Bellows scored 55 goals for the Minnesota North Stars in 1989-90, played in three Stanley Cup Finals with three different teams, and won the Cup with Montreal in 1993. He played his last NHL game in 1999 and stayed close to the city where his career began. He still deals in numbers that go up and down; only the scoreboard is different.

Where is Brian Bellows now?

Brian Bellows works in Minneapolis as a broker at the investment bank Piper Sandler, and FINRA’s public BrokerCheck register listed him with the firm’s Minneapolis office as of October 2026. The same register shows that he entered the securities industry in March 2000, the year after he retired from hockey. He told the Montreal Canadiens’ alumni site in January 2012 that he was “a broker at Piper Jaffray” in Minneapolis and that he had taken summer classes during his playing career to earn a diploma in finance.

In between, a 2018 roundup of pro athletes who moved into finance by The WealthAdvisor placed him at Piper Jaffray after 17 years in the NHL.

Where does Brian Bellows live now?

Brian Bellows made his home in the Twin Cities after his playing days, in the market where he broke into the NHL in 1982, the Canadiens’ alumni site reported in 2012. Hockey stayed part of that life. In the same interview, he said he coached a bantam team, played about a dozen games a year with the North Stars alumni, and came back to the Bell Center in Montreal at least once a year. He still had his 1993 Stanley Cup ring and wore it mostly for games there and special events.

The family name is also back in the NHL record books: his son Kieffer Bellows was drafted 19th overall by the New York Islanders in 2016, NHL.com reported at the time.

Brian Bellows’ draft: second behind Gord Kluzak in 1982

Brian Bellows went second overall to the Minnesota North Stars in the 1982 NHL Draft, one pick after the Boston Bruins took defenceman Gord Kluzak from the Billings Bighorns. Bellows came from the Kitchener Rangers. The same draft produced Scott Stevens at No. 5, Phil Housley at No. 6, and Dave Andreychuk at No. 16, while Doug Gilmour lasted until No. 134.

Bellows stepped straight into the NHL and scored 35 goals as a rookie in 1982-83. Knee injuries limited Kluzak to 299 NHL games over seven seasons with Boston. Bellows played 1,188.

Brian Bellows’ 55-goal season with the North Stars

The peak came in 1989-90, when Brian Bellows scored 55 goals and 99 points in 80 games. He reached 30 goals seven times in ten seasons in Minnesota, and 342 of his 485 NHL goals came in a North Stars sweater.

The following spring was the deepest playoff run in his Minnesota years. Bellows had 10 goals and 29 points in 23 games in 1991 as the North Stars reached the Stanley Cup Final before losing to Pittsburgh in six games.

Brian Bellows’ Stanley Cup with Montreal and a third Final

He later played for Tampa Bay and Anaheim before Washington brought him in during the 1997-98 season. That spring he had six goals and 13 points in 21 playoff games as the Capitals reached the Stanley Cup Final, where Detroit swept them. He played one more season in Washington and retired in 1999.
