John Klingberg announced his retirement on Friday after 12 NHL seasons, and he didn’t wait long to line up what comes next.
The 34-year-old finished his career with exactly 700 regular-season games, putting up 92 goals and 443 points across stops with the Dallas Stars, Anaheim Ducks, Minnesota Wild, Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers and San Jose Sharks. Eight of those seasons came in Dallas, where he made the All-Rookie team in 2014-15 and the All-Star team in 2017-18 after a career-best 67-point campaign.

He reached the Stanley Cup Final twice without winning it, losing to Tampa Bay with the Stars in 2020 and to Florida with the Oilers in 2025, and he won World Championship gold with Sweden in both 2017 and 2018.
Now he’s moving to the other side of the camera. Klingberg has been hired as a hockey analyst by SVT, Sweden’s national public broadcaster, a job he says he’d been thinking about long before he actually hung up his skates.
“It feels really inspiring, actually,” Klingberg said, per SVT. “It’s something I’ve thought I could be good at later in life, once I was done with hockey. So I’m very excited to get this chance.”

He also believes his recent experience at the top level gives him something different to offer viewers.
“I think I can come in and look at hockey from a different angle,” he said.
Klingberg’s workload will cover the SHL on the program ‘Hockeykväll‘ and across SVT’s news channels, along with national team broadcasts including the World Juniors and the Euro Hockey Tour. He last played in the NHL this past spring, recording 27 points in 56 games with San Jose while averaging over 20 minutes a night.
