Gary Bettman is the commissioner of the National Hockey League, a post Bettman has held since 1 February 1993. Bettman came to hockey from the NBA, where Bettman had been senior vice president and general counsel, and has since overseen the league's move into the U.S. Sun Belt, three lockouts and the arrival of a hard salary cap. In June 2026 Bettman opened a six-month evaluation of a 33rd franchise in Houston or Austin.
