Roger McQueen: Everything you need to know

Roger McQueen is a Canadian center for the Anaheim Ducks, drafted tenth overall in 2025 and playing in a number borrowed from a Pixar film. Roger McQueen made his NHL debut on 13 October 2026 after a season at Providence College and a back injury that cost him most of his draft year. The NHL lists him at 6-foot-5.

Why does Roger McQueen wear number 95?

Because of a cartoon car. Lightning McQueen, the racer in Pixar’s Cars films, carries 95, and the number has followed Roger McQueen since Anaheim took him tenth overall in 2025. NHL.com reported in June 2025 that he picked the number himself, and ESPN wrote in October 2026 that the Ducks handed him a No. 95 jersey when they drafted him.

His own comments on the subject were cooler than the marketing. “My favourite number is still 13,” he said, calling 95 something that was not set in stone and the talk around it outside noise. The club has leaned in regardless: his rookie lap was skated to Sheryl Crow’s Real Gone, from the first film’s soundtrack, and he was flown by helicopter to Disneyland on the day he was drafted, with his father beside him.

That has never been confirmed, in either direction, so the honest answer is that it is unverified. What is documented runs through hockey in Saskatchewan rather than Hollywood: his father Scott McQueen played for the Red Deer Rebels and the Saskatoon Blades between 1997 and 2000, and an uncle, Rennie McQueen, played for the Spokane Chiefs.

473 days passed between the draft that made Roger McQueen a top-ten pick and his first NHL game. He was selected on 27 June 2025 and debuted on 13 October 2026; the gap was filled by a college season, a tryout contract, and an entry-level deal rather than by waiting.

Anaheim’s reasoning for taking a player who had barely played was about shape and skating. “There’s certainly power forward written all over him in how he plays the game,” general manager Pat Verbeek said after the first round on 27 June 2025.

What happened to Roger McQueen’s back?

It cost him his draft season. NHL.com reported in August 2026 that the injury was a pars fracture between the fourth and fifth lumbar vertebrae, initially misdiagnosed as a bulging disc, and that Roger McQueen first felt it playing for Canada at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup in August 2023. He played the first eight games of Brandon’s 2024-25 season, was out for close to five months, and returned for the club’s last nine regular-season games and three in the playoffs, leaving him with seventeen games in the season before his draft.

He said there was nothing to do. “Walking my dog twice a day was basically what they told me was the only thing I could do,” he said. Anaheim drafted him tenth regardless, and Verbeek said the club had consulted its doctors and sports science staff about his injuries before deciding it was comfortable. NHL.com reported in June 2025 that a further injury in the 2025 playoffs limited him to three games there, which he described as a muscle problem related to the fracture, and that he felt “100 percent” at the scouting combine that month. No new back problem has been reported since, and NHL.com described him as healthy in August 2026.

When did Roger McQueen make his NHL debut?

On 13 October 2026, at home against Calgary. Anaheim recalled Roger McQueen from the San Diego Gulls that day after placing center Ryan Poehling on injured reserve, the club announced. He played 11:26 in a 4-2 loss, and he had earned the call with three goals in his first four American Hockey League games of the season.

Head coach Joel Quenneville had watched him push for the job in camp. “Roger’s got some upside in what could be a really nice career,” Quenneville told ESPN in October 2026.

Did Roger McQueen play college hockey?

He played one season, and it rebuilt his stock. Roger McQueen played 36 games for Providence College in 2025-26, scoring 11 goals and 27 points; he was named Hockey East’s rookie of the year, made the conference all-rookie team, and wore 29 rather than 95 while he was there.

His coach there framed the ceiling in terms of what the size gives him. “His potential is top-six center, just with his size, his ability to win face-offs, his playmaking,” Nate Leaman said in August 2026.

What has Roger McQueen done for Canada?

Roger McQueen won gold at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup in August 2023 with four goals and seven points in five games, and gold at the 2024 Under-18 World Championship, where he played only two of Canada’s games and took 29 penalty minutes in one of them. He also played the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, with eight points in six games.

Accounts of why that Under-18 tournament ended early differ, and the only on-the-record explanation came from his future general manager. “He plays a physical game, so he ended up getting suspended in that tournament for being physical,” Verbeek said. He has never played the World Junior Championship.

What is Roger McQueen’s contract?

A three-year entry-level deal signed on 18 April 2026. PuckPedia puts the cap hit at $1,075,000 a season, with a total value of $3,225,000, a $102,500 signing bonus in 2026-27, and restricted free agency in 2029. Before it took effect, he signed an amateur tryout with the San Diego Gulls and made his professional debut on 3 April 2026, against the Bakersfield Condors.
