Rod Brind’Amour and his Carolina Hurricanes are just one win away from capturing the Stanley Cup. It would be Brind’Amour’s second championship with the Hurricanes, having won it as a player and captain in 2006. Meanwhile, during a recent press conference, Brind’Amour was asked what would happen if the 2006 version of himself lined up against current Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal. In response, his answer had the reporters cracking up.
Back in 2006, Rod Brind’Amour captained the Carolina Hurricanes to the first and only Stanley Cup championship in franchise history.

Rod Brind’Amour as Hurricanes captain
Fast forward 20 years, and Brind’Amour is on the verge of repeating the feat — this time from behind the bench as head coach. Meanwhile, the Hurricanes are now led on the ice by Jordan Staal. Notably, Staal has a Stanley Cup of his own, having won one with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2009. Ironically, on their way to that championship, the Penguins swept the Hurricanes — yes, the very same Hurricanes captained by Brind’Amour — in the Eastern Conference Final.
Hilarious answer
At a press conference, a reporter presented Brind’Amour with an interesting hypothetical question.
“If 2006 Rod Brind’Amour were lined up against 2026 Jordan Staal, what would happen?”
Brind’Amour had the entire room laughing with his answer.
“Well, I can tell you, I can’t remember the years exactly, but I did line up against Jordan Staal in 2009, maybe. And that didn’t go very well. So I guess that answers that question. I’ll leave it at that,” Brind’Amour said.
Game 6 will be played on Sunday in Vegas.
