Why did Jack Roslovic sign with the Toronto Maple Leafs?

Roslovic signed a two-year deal worth $8,000,000 on the first day of free agency in 2026, and the contrast with the year before is the point. The year before, he was still unsigned when training camps opened and did not have a deal until October.

“It’s definitely a lot easier logistically on my end to be able to get this done right on July 1st,” he told reporters, adding that it was “definitely a breath that I can take now to let the excitement build and be ready for a strong training camp.” He also said Toronto’s interest had been there the previous summer, and that the club’s new management “do their homework.”

He and Auston Matthews were teammates in the United States National Team Development Program on a line that The Hockey News has reported also included Matthew Tkachuk. Asked what stayed with him from those years, Roslovic pointed to what Matthews did while he couldn’t play: “He wasn’t even playing and we knew how good he was going to be just because of the way he handled himself in that situation.” He opened the 2026-27 training camp on Matthews’s right wing.

Roslovic has reached 20 goals in a season three times, and each time it was for a different club: 22 for Columbus in 2021-22, 22 for Carolina in 2024-25, and 21 for Edmonton in 2025-26. The last two were back-to-back.

How many NHL teams has Jack Roslovic played for?

Toronto is his sixth. Winnipeg drafted him 25th overall in 2015, and he signed his first contract in July 2016 after one season of college hockey, then spent parts of four seasons between Winnipeg and the AHL.

Columbus acquired him on January 23, 2021, in a trade that sent Pierre-Luc Dubois to Winnipeg and brought Patrik Laine to Ohio. He spent three and a half seasons there, the longest stay of his career, before Columbus traded him to the New York Rangers at the 2024 deadline for a conditional fourth-round pick. Carolina signed him as a free agent on 1 July 2024, and Edmonton signed him in October 2025.

Is Jack Roslovic a good hockey player?

Roslovic has reached 29 points or more in seven separate seasons, mostly as a second- or third-line forward rather than a first-line one. What has changed is how he describes the job.

“In the past I’ve said being more of a complementary player,” he said in September 2026, but “as I’ve gotten older and, obviously, a relationship with Auston, it’s driving too.” He said he was “really trying to help everyone elevate” rather than just complement. Jim Hiller, asked about the line as a whole rather than about Roslovic, was more reserved: “I’d like to see a little more, to be honest with you.”

Where is Jack Roslovic from?

Roslovic was born on 29 January 1997 in Columbus, Ohio, and he is one of relatively few NHL players to come out of the city. His parents are John and Jane Roslovic, whom Miami University’s athletics department names in his college biography, and The Hockey News has reported that they were original season-ticket holders with the Blue Jackets and that he watched Columbus’s 2014 playoff series from the first row behind the visiting bench.

He played his minor hockey in the city for the Ohio AAA Blue Jackets and has stayed involved with that program since. “I’m Columbus faithful,” he told the Blue Jackets’ own site in 2021.

Has Jack Roslovic been injured?

Roslovic missed about four weeks for Edmonton between late November and 21 December 2025. He last played on 25 November; the Oilers placed him on the injured list and described the problem only as undisclosed.
