Brad Marchand names the NHL’s new “rat”

Brad Marchand is known in the hockey world as a “rat.” Now, he has revealed who he considers to be the newest rat in the league: Zach Benson of the Buffalo Sabres.

Since his NHL debut in 2009, Brad Marchand has been known as a pest to play against. He always plays on the edge and has a nearly unique way of getting under his opponents’ skin.

Marchand’s style of play has proven successful, as he has won two Stanley Cups and recorded more than 1,000 NHL points. Although Marchand and the Florida Panthers missed the playoffs this season, he is still watching the games. And he has noticed one player whom he believes could become the next “rat” in the NHL: Zach Benson.

”Skilled little player”

Benson has become a key player for the Buffalo Sabres — not only by scoring important goals, but also through his ability to constantly irritate opponents. Brad Marchand says Benson reminds him of himself as a young player.
“Yes, he does, for sure. I love his game. He’s not timid at all, goes to the dirty areas, he’s a very competitive, skilled little player, and loves to stir it up. He’s showing right now that he’s a gamer too. Very impressive considering how young he is as well. He’s going to have a long career,” Marchand told NHL.com.

In 12 playoff games this season, Zach Benson has scored five goals and added four assists. The Buffalo Sabres will face the Montreal Canadiens on Monday night in a much-anticipated Game 7 of the Eastern Conference second round.
