Nikita Kucherov asked the Tampa Bay Lightning to trade him on Friday and said on Monday that the request was about poor communication and respect rather than money. A report from Daria Tuboltseva at RG.org, citing an anonymous NHL source, puts three names to what he actually wants.
Connor McDavid, Auston Matthews and David Pastrnak.
The source’s explanation of why frames it as a question of exposure rather than trophies.
“He wants to be the top scorer every year and play on a team with McDavid or Matthews or Pastrnak, plus in a big market, so people talk about how good he is,” the source said. “Playing in Florida, people forget about you from time to time.”
The same source was considerably harsher about his current employers.
“He understands that Tampa has already squeezed everything out of itself and you can’t win there,” they said. “The team is average on its own.”
This is worth reading with the appropriate caution. It is one outlet, one anonymous source, and nobody from Kucherov’s side has confirmed a word of it.
Toronto’s projected 2027-28 cap picture:
| Category | Amount |
|---|---|
| Projected cap space | $2.4 million |
| Auston Matthews’ cap hit | $13.25 million |
| William Nylander’s cap hit | $11.5 million |
Can the Maple Leafs afford Nikita Kucherov?
PuckPedia has the Toronto Maple Leafs projected at roughly $2.4 million in space for 2027-28, against a cap expected to reach $113.5 million. That is the problem with the destination this same source identifies as the likeliest. Signing Kucherov at $15 million would mean clearing about $12.6 million more. At the $20 million his camp is reportedly seeking, the figure rises to around $17.6 million.
The route the source describes wouldn’t involve Tampa Bay at all.
“Toronto is the more realistic option,” they said. “Not a trade. He will just go there in the summer.”
Kucherov’s contract carries a $9.5 million cap hit and expires on July 1, 2027, which means waiting it out is available to him regardless of what the Lightning decide. Elliotte Friedman has separately said both Toronto and Montreal are among the clubs Kucherov would consider in a trade, while being unable to confirm which teams are on his ten-team approved list.
There is one small connection in Toronto’s favor. Kirill Marchenko, already on the Leafs roster, shares an agent with Kucherov in Dan Milstein.
Tampa Bay are not engaging with any of it publicly. Julien BriseBois has stated the club has no intention of trading him, Jon Cooper says he is 100 percent part of the team, and Kucherov has kept producing with 18 points in 13 games.
