Where is Alex Formenton playing now?
In Edmonton. TSN reported on 9 September 2026 that the Oilers signed him to a one-year, $850,000 contract, and he scored his first goal for them on 10 October 2026, backhanding a Mathieu Joseph feed on a rush in a 3-1 win at San Jose.
He’s there for speed. “He can skate a little bit,” head coach Mike Babcock said of him, and more usefully: “Elite penalty killer; puts pressure on the other team.” Formenton’s own account of arriving was short on triumph. “It was a difficult road. It was tough on my family and me personally,” he said in September 2026. After his first pre-season game for Edmonton, a 5-2 win over Winnipeg on 19 September 2026: “It was nice to get a goal, but it was nice to get the legs moving and get back up to pace.”

The Edmonton contract pays $62,500 more than the Ottawa offer he turned down four years earlier. Ottawa’s qualifying offer in the summer of 2022 was $787,500, and the Oilers deal is $850,000, a difference of under eight per cent. The cost was never the money: it was four complete NHL seasons, 328 scheduled games, that he did not play.
One season carries most of his record in Ottawa. His 2021-22 campaign accounts for eighteen of the 23 goals and 32 of the 39 points he scored in 109 games for the Senators.

Why did Alex Formenton leave the Ottawa Senators?
Because a contract was never signed, and a deadline passed. Ottawa made him a qualifying offer of $787,500 in the summer of 2022; he did not accept it, no new deal followed, and he missed the December 1, 2022, cut-off that makes a restricted free agent ineligible for the rest of the season. His own words, in a legal filing reported by TSN: the Senators “did not propose or agree to a new contract with Alex prior to December 1, 2022,” and so “Alex was ineligible to play in the NHL for the remainder of the 2022-23 season.”
Ottawa kept his rights for years afterward and finally let them go on 8 May 2026, removing him from the club’s free agent list with NHL Central Registry and making him an unrestricted free agent. Senators general manager Steve Staios had said in September 2025 that a fresh start would be best for everybody.

What happened in Alex Formenton’s court case?
He was acquitted. Alex Formenton was one of five former members of Canada’s 2018 world junior team charged with sexual assault in early 2024, in a case concerning events in London, Ontario, in 2018, and on 24 July 2025 Justice Maria Carroccia of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice found all five not guilty. He had pleaded not guilty and faced a single count.
Justice Carroccia’s reasoning turned on the complainant’s evidence. “I do not find the evidence of E.M. to be either credible or reliable,” she said, as The Globe and Mail reported, and she concluded that “the Crown cannot meet its onus on any of the counts before me.” The Crown announced on 21 August 2025 that it would not appeal, which made the acquittals final.
When was Alex Formenton allowed to return to the NHL?
The league set the dates itself. On 11 September 2025, the NHL announced that the players involved would be eligible to sign contracts no sooner than 15 October 2025 and eligible to play games no sooner than 1 December 2025. Its statement called the conduct “deeply troubling and unacceptable” and said that “while found not to have been criminal, the conduct of the players involved certainly did not meet” the league’s standard of moral integrity, while noting that the players had already been away from the game for twenty months. The NHL Players’ Association said the same day that it considered the matter closed.
Formenton did not sign immediately. He stayed in Switzerland for all of 2025-26 and returned to North America the following September.
What did Alex Formenton do in Switzerland?
He scored at a better rate than he ever managed in the NHL. Across three seasons with HC Ambri-Piotta in the Swiss National League, he scored 33 goals and totaled 52 points in 88 games, which works out to 0.59 points per game against 0.36 in Ottawa. He signed there on 14 December 2022, won the Spengler Cup with the club that same month, and sat out the whole of 2024-25 without playing anywhere.
