Why do hockey fans love Wes McCauley?
Because he announces calls as though he is enjoying himself, and almost nobody else in a striped shirt does. The job is built around not being noticed, and most officials deliver a ruling flatly by design. McCauley’s get clipped, posted, and imitated instead.

Wes McCauley has worked at least three times as many NHL regular-season games as his father did. UPI’s obituary put John McCauley’s total at 442 games and the officials’ association says more than 500.

Who was Wes McCauley’s father?
John McCauley, who refereed in the NHL through the 1970s and then ran its officiating department until he died. He was born in Brampton, Ontario, and had won a junior lacrosse championship with the Brampton Excelsiors before hockey took over.
His refereeing career ended away from the ice. After the 1979 Challenge Cup final between NHL All-Stars and the Soviet national team at Madison Square Garden, he went out to eat and was punched in the face by a man in the street. Paul Stewart, himself a former NHL referee, has written that the injury caused nerve and muscle damage, double vision, and five operations. A referee who cannot judge distance cannot referee, and he was off the ice within two years.
The league kept him anyway. He became assistant director of officiating in 1979 and director of officiating in 1986, putting him in charge of every official in the sport. He died on 2 June 1989, aged 44, from complications after emergency gallbladder surgery, UPI reported at the time. Wes was 17.

Seriously, and nearly for a living. Wes McCauley was a defenceman at Michigan State, where he shared the captaincy with Bryan Smolinski and won the first Terry Flanagan Memorial Award in 1992-93. Detroit drafted him 150th overall, in the eighth round, in 1990.
He turned professional and spent several seasons in the minor leagues, with stops in Las Vegas, Fort Wayne and Knoxville and a spell in Italy, before injuries ended his career in 1997 without an NHL appearance.
His own debut as an NHL referee came as an emergency. The league hired him in 2001 and put him in the AHL, and on 20 January 2003 he got the call because Brad Watson had food poisoning. The State News reported he reached the rink in Columbus at 6.15 that evening. He became a full-time NHL official in 2005.
