Ashlyn Sullivan took the Flyers job with no hockey background and learned the sport from the two men sitting next to her on set. Scott Hartnell played 1,249 NHL games, and Al Morganti has covered the league in Philadelphia for decades, and both of them taught her the team and the rules from scratch.
“We did crash courses — we sat at lunch for three hours and went through the team and learned the sport,” Ashlyn Sullivan told South Jersey Magazine.
Her own sport growing up was softball, and she has described herself as a benchwarmer. The job she took to get into the NFL was a seasonal broadcasting assistant post with the Jacksonville Jaguars that came with no promise of camera time at all: logging footage, labeling sacks and interceptions, wrapping camera cords. She talked her way onto camera from there, stayed six seasons, and then left for a sport she had never covered, against advice.
