Alex Ovechkin’s goals against every NHL team

Alex Ovechkin has scored 58 goals against the Winnipeg Jets. That is more than most wingers manage against the entire league in three seasons.

Then there is Boston, who have seen him almost exactly as often, 72 games to 77, and given up 30. Same shooter, half the damage.

Ovechkin has played 1,573 regular-season games for Washington: 929 goals, 758 assists, 1,687 points. All of it is in the table below, covering the 31 franchises he has faced through the 2025-26 season. The 2026-27 season is not in it.

Read the goal column, not the points column. Ovechkin has scored 40 or more goals against twelve different franchises, and 30 or more against fourteen. Forty goals is a career season for most forwards. He has done it against a dozen separate opponents, one club at a time.

The Winnipeg row needs a note, because it covers two cities. Ovechkin entered the league in 2005-06 and faced the Atlanta Thrashers for six seasons before that franchise moved north in 2011 and became the current Winnipeg Jets. Hockey-Reference files the whole history under the club’s present name, so the 77 games above are Atlanta and Winnipeg combined. Ovechkin never played the original Winnipeg Jets, who left for Phoenix in 1996; those games sit in the Utah row, which is empty for him until 2005.

Ovechkin has faced 31 of the 32 franchises. The 32nd is Washington, the only club he has played for.

Compiled from Hockey-Reference’s career splits. Rates calculated. The 31 rows sum exactly to Ovechkin’s career totals in all four columns, through the 2025-26 season.

How many goals does Alex Ovechkin have?

929 in 1,573 regular-season games through 2025-26, a rate of 0.59 per game, all of them for Washington.

That figure passed Wayne Gretzky’s 894 in April 2025 and made Ovechkin the leading goalscorer in NHL history. The table above is that record broken into 31 pieces and handed to the clubs who gave the goals up.

How many points does Alex Ovechkin have?

1,687, from 929 goals and 758 assists.

The split is the unusual part, and it runs the opposite way to almost everybody near the top of the all-time lists. More goals than assists is rare at any volume and close to unheard of at his. Look at it this way: his best assist total against a single club is 57, from 96 games against Carolina. His best goal total is 58, from 77 games against Winnipeg. He has out-scored his own playmaking against one team in fewer games than it took him to out-pass himself against another.

How does Alex Ovechkin compare with Wayne Gretzky?

On goals, Ovechkin is ahead. On everything else, not close.

Gretzky finished with 2,857 points in 1,487 games and 1,963 assists. Ovechkin has 1,687 points in more games, and his assist total is well under half of Gretzky’s. The two men arrived at the same record from opposite directions, which is also visible in the split tables: Gretzky’s record against every NHL team is led by assist columns, and Ovechkin’s is led by goal columns.

Which team has held Alex Ovechkin down?

Boston, over a sample big enough to mean something.

Thirty goals in 72 games is a rate of 0.42, against a career rate of 0.59. Every other club he has faced 40 times or more has given up goals faster than that. Dallas has the lowest points-per-game figure on the whole table at 0.76 and Colorado is next at 0.83, but both come from 29 games rather than 72.

Boston is the one that survives scrutiny, and it survives it easily. Seventy-two separate nights across twenty seasons is not a run of bad luck. It is a plan that worked.

Where does this data come from?

Games, goals and assists come from Hockey-Reference’s career splits, pulled on 14 September 2026. Rates are calculated. All 31 rows were summed and reconciled against Ovechkin’s career line of 1,573 games, 929 goals, 758 assists and 1,687 points.

These are regular-season figures and do not include the playoffs. They run through the end of 2025-26. The Capitals’ channels and streams are in our guide to how to watch the Washington Capitals.
