Alexander Ovechkin’s answer about his future

Alexander Ovechkin may have skated in his final NHL game on Tuesday. Ahead of the matchup, former teammate T. J. Oshie caught up with Ovechkin and asked about his future. The response was classic—Ovechkin quickly reminded Oshie that he hasn’t stepped away just yet.

Alexander Ovechkin played his 82nd game of the season on Tuesday. In doing so, he became just the fifth player in NHL history aged 40 or older to appear in all 82 games of a single season.

Alexander Ovechkin’s last NHL game

If the 2–1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets—in which Alexander Ovechkin recorded an assist—turns out to be his final NHL appearance, he will retire as one of the greatest players in hockey history. With 1,687 points in 1,573 games, including a record 929 goals, along with a Stanley Cup and numerous individual awards, his résumé ranks among the all-time elite.
Ovechkin’s contract expires after the season, and he has yet to make a decision about his future.

Perfect response to T.J. Oshie

The uncertainty surrounding Alexander Ovechkin’s future has led to widespread speculation across the hockey world. Even Oshie is as curious as anyone. Now working for ESPN, he had the chance to speak with Ovechkin before Tuesday’s game—and naturally asked about what comes next.
“It’s not going to be an easy decision. Sometimes you want it, sometimes you don’t. We’ll see,” Ovechkin said.
“Whenever you do step away, what do you think you’re going to miss the most?” Oshie asked.
“I didn’t step away yet, so we’ll figure it out. You tell me!” Ovechkin replied with a smile. Oshie retired in 2025 after 16 seasons in the NHL.
Only time will tell if Ovechkin will play in the NHL again. You can watch the full interview below.
