Cole Hutson: Early Life

Cole Hutson was born on June 28, 2006, in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. His mother is Julie Hutson, and his father is Rob Hutson, a former hockey player turned coach. Cole has three brothers: Quinn Hutson (born 2002), Lane Hutson (born 2004), and Lars Hutson (born 2008).

Cole Hutson: Youth Career

The left-handed defenseman played for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program during the 2022–2023 season. He tallied 10 goals and 58 assists for 68 points in 61 games, setting a new record.
The following season, Hutson registered 15 goals and 36 assists for 51 points in 51 games. His total of 119 points ranks him as the all-time leading defenseman in program history.
For the 2024–2025 season, Hutson committed to Boston University. During his freshman year, he recorded 14 goals and 34 assists for 48 points in 39 games, leading all rookies in scoring. After the season, he was named to the Hockey East First Team and All-Rookie Team. He also earned Hockey East Rookie of the Year honors and received the Tim Taylor Award.
In the 2025–2026 season, Hutson recorded 10 goals and 22 assists for 32 points in 35 games.

Senior Career

After completing his second college season, Cole Hutson signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Washington Capitals on March 15, 2026. Three days later, he made his NHL debut and scored an empty-net goal in a 4–1 win against the Ottawa Senators.

International Career

Cole Hutson has represented Team USA at the U17, U18, and U20 levels.
At the U17 level, he recorded nine assists in seven games at the 2022 World U-17 Hockey Challenge, helping the USA win gold.
In the 2023 IIHF U18 World Championships, Hutson scored one goal and added 11 assists, leading all defensemen in points as Team USA went undefeated to win gold.
At the 2024 IIHF U18 World Championships, he registered four goals and nine assists in seven games, helping the USA win silver.
At the 2025 World Junior Championships, Hutson became the first defenseman to lead the tournament in scoring, with three goals and eight assists in seven games, as Team USA captured gold.
Later that year, at the 2026 World Junior Championships, he recorded one goal and three assists for four points in three games before Team USA was eliminated in the quarterfinals.
Hutson holds the record for the most career World Junior points by a defenseman for Team USA.

Personal Life

Cole Hutson comes from a hockey family. His father, Rob, is a former player and coach, and all three of his brothers also play hockey.
Quinn Hutson plays forward for the Bakersfield Condors (AHL) and is signed by the Edmonton Oilers.
Lane Hutson is a defenseman for the Montreal Canadiens and won the Calder Trophy in 2025.
Lars Hutson is a defenseman for the Muskegon Lumberjacks in the USHL.
