Crosby and Ovechkin goals
They’ve each lifted the Stanley Cup — Crosby three times and Ovechkin once — and their trophy cabinets are filled with individual awards. As Metropolitan Division rivals for more than two decades, they’ve faced each other countless times.
They’ve also gone head-to-head with the New York Rangers, where Henrik Lundqvist guarded the net for 15 seasons. Entering the league in 2005 — the same year as Crosby and Ovechkin — the trio knows each other well and has always relished the competition.
Henrik Lundqvist’s reaction
Ahead of Sunday’s milestone matchup, Crosby and Ovechkin posed for a photo together. Moments later, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang joined in, having also been central figures in the long-running rivalry.
During the NHL on TNT broadcast, Lundqvist was reminded that three of the players in the photo are those who scored the most goals against him. Ovechkin and Crosby each netted 24 goals on Lundqvist, while Malkin scored 20.
That realization led to a hilarious reaction from the former Rangers star.
“Oh boy, here we go. I was thinking, ‘That’s a great photo — I love that photo.’ But after hearing that stat, I don’t want it anymore. I’m going to burn it,” Lundqvist said, sending the studio into laughter.
