Fans love the new Matthew Schaefer 2026 Olympic update

Both fans and insiders have been calling for Matthew Schaefer to make Team Canada’s roster for the 2026 Olympics — and now, it seems they might get their wish.

Schaefer has not even been an NHL player for two full months, yet he has already made a major impact. In his debut, he became the youngest defenseman in NHL history to record a point.

Several records

Then, in November, the New York Islanders blueliner became the youngest defenseman in league history to score a multi-goal game. His rapid rise has fueled growing support for him to join the star-studded Team Canada at the 2026 Olympics, which begin on February 11 in Italy. And it appears Team Canada has taken notice.
Schaefer has confirmed that he has entered the Olympic drug-testing protocol. What does that mean? It makes him eligible for selection to Canada’s final roster. For now, however, Schaefer remains focused on his play with the Islanders, according to Andrew Gross of Newsday.

Matthew Schaefer to make Team Canada

Fans, meanwhile, love the idea that Schaefer could be considered for one of Canada’s defensive spots.
“He certainly deserves it. Schaefer has been unbelievable,” one fan wrote on X.
“I want nothing more than for him to be on Team Canada. He is 100% capable of making the team,” another said.
“If Hockey Canada doesn’t take this kid to the Olympics, the entire management team should be fired,” a third added.
