Borje Salming

Börje Salming is a Swedish defenceman who became the first European-trained star in the NHL, playing 16 seasons for the Toronto Maple Leafs from 1973. Salming is still the Maple Leafs’ all-time assists leader and was the first European-trained player inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, in 1996. Salming died on 24 November 2022, aged 71.
