John Chayka criticized for his first press conference

John Chayka was presented as the new general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs. But when he was asked about his past employer, the Arizona Coyotes, Chayka dodged the questions. Now, fans are calling him out for not answering and taking responsibility.

The 2025–2026 campaign for the Toronto Maple Leafs did not go as planned—at all. Instead of competing for their first Stanley Cup since 1967, the Maple Leafs found themselves in 15th place in the Eastern Conference.

John Chayka as general manager

Now, the work to return to contender status has begun for the Maple Leafs. On March 30, they relieved their general manager, Brad Treliving, of his duties. And on May 3, the organization announced that John Chayka had been appointed to the role of general manager for the Original Six franchise. Mats Sundin was also introduced as a senior advisor.

The hiring of John Chayka has been questioned by both analysts and fans. His tenure with the Coyotes came to an end in 2020 after it was revealed that Chayka had terminated his contract to speak with other teams while still under contract. In January 2021, he was suspended for the remainder of the year. It was also reported that Chayka had held scouting combines for draft prospects—something strictly forbidden by the NHL—which ultimately cost the Coyotes their 2020 second-round pick and their 2021 first-round pick in the NHL Draft.

First press conference

During his first press conference as Maple Leafs general manager, John Chayka was questioned about his past by reporters.
“I’d just say that Arizona was a really complicated situation. It was the biggest challenge I’ve ever taken on in my life. It was honestly the hardest thing I’ve ever done and also, in a lot of ways, the most rewarding. Through no one’s fault, there was a lot of work being done to try to find a new arena, new ownership, et cetera. As those things happened, there is a lot that gets missed. The value of stability and alignment are two key tenets I take from that. I’ve made decisions I am proud of, and I also have made mistakes I’ve learned from. I am human. I own all of it, and I am better because of it,” Chayka said at the press conference.

Fans are enraged

Fans were not satisfied with his response and are now, as a result, calling him out online for giving non-answers about his past.
“Buzzwords galore. Get used to a whole lot of them with zero substance. Chayka is a coward. It’s embarrassing the Toronto Maple Leafs of all franchises would hire him,” one fan wrote on X.
“He didn’t even answer the question. Oh boy, we’re in for a treat. This dude needs to stick to running his Wendy’s franchises and not a hockey club,” another fan wrote.
“How does ownership instability make you hold your own illegal, non-NHL-sanctioned combine testing?” a third asked.
