Is Logan Cooley a good hockey player?

Cooley was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team after scoring 44 points in his first season, and he scored at a higher goal rate in each of the two seasons that followed. He was one of three finalists for the Hobey Baker Award after a single season of college hockey, and he won World Championship gold with the United States in 2025.

Vincent Trocheck, who has known him since Cooley was a child, put it bluntly: “In my mind, there was just no way that he wasn’t going to play in the NHL.” On what sets him apart: “The way he skates is just insane.”

Completed seasons. His NHL totals through 2025-26 are 69 goals and 152 points in 211 games, with 92 penalty minutes. He has three points in six playoff games, all from Utah’s first postseason series in 2026, where he scored the goal that won the franchise its first playoff game.

Cooley’s goals per game rose in each of his first three NHL seasons: 0.24, then 0.33, then 0.44. The third of those came in a season cut to 54 games, which is why the raw goal total looks flat while the rate does not.

What is Logan Cooley’s contract with the Utah Mammoth?

Utah signed Cooley to an eight-year deal on 29 October 2025 worth $80,000,000 in total, at a $10,000,000 cap hit. It runs from 2026-27 through 2033-34 and takes him to unrestricted free agency in 2034. Before that, he was on the three-year entry-level contract he signed on 27 July 2023 at a $950,000 cap hit.

The club’s announcement of the extension does not state the total value. ESPN reported the $80,000,000 figure on the same day.

No published source connects them. Logan Cooley’s parents are Eric and Cathy Cooley; he has brothers Eric and Riley and a sister, Lauren; and the University of Minnesota’s athletics department lists his uncles as John and Tom Mooney. The goaltender Devin Cooley was born in Los Gatos, California, on 25 May 1997; his parents are Scott and Heynia Cooley, and his brothers are Ryan and Brandon.

Where is Logan Cooley from, and where did he play before the NHL?

Cooley was born in Pittsburgh on 4 May 2004 and grew up in West Mifflin, a borough just south of the city. He played his minor hockey in the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program, where he spent five seasons, and his statistical record runs from under-14 to under-16; then he spent two seasons with the United States National Team Development Program in Plymouth, Michigan, and one season at the University of Minnesota, where he scored 60 points in 39 games.

Playing in Pittsburgh still means something. “This city means so much to me,” Cooley has said. “I’m super fortunate to be from here and to be able to grow up through the Penguins organization.”

How does Logan Cooley know Vincent Trocheck?

Trocheck grew up with one of Cooley’s cousins, and the two families are close. By Cooley’s own approximation, he has known Trocheck since he was about eight and has skated with him in the summers since he was ten or twelve, which makes the connection older than Cooley’s junior career.

It was not relaxed at the start. “I was a little scared, to be honest,” Cooley has said of those first summer sessions. “I remember not wanting to give him a bad pass or being scared they’re going to yell at you. But no, they were always great, super supportive.” Trocheck’s side of it was simpler: “I’ve always kind of kept an eye on him.”

Has Logan Cooley been injured?

Cooley missed a long stretch of the 2025-26 season. He collided with a goaltender on 5 December 2025 and grabbed his left knee, but skated off and finished the game. On 11 December, general manager Bill Armstrong said he would miss at least eight weeks, with the issue reported as a lower-body injury.

He played 54 of 82 games that season and was not named to the United States squad for the 2026 Olympics.
