Trevor Zegras picked up a two-minute minor on Thursday for starting a shift with his jersey tucked into his pants, an infraction that hadn’t been called in the NHL for 13 years. On Saturday, before the Philadelphia Flyers faced Washington, his teammates made their feelings on the matter clear.
Nearly the entire roster skated out for warmups with their jerseys tucked in. Captain Sean Couturier, alternate captains Travis Konecny and Travis Sanheim, Rasmus Ristolainen, Porter Martone, Alex Bump, Cam York and Jamie Drysdale were among those who either tucked the back or stuffed the whole thing into their pants. Zegras took part too – and on social media, everyone praised the Flyers for the move.
”That’s how you back your guy,” Spittin’ Chiclets wrote on X.
Drysdale played it down afterwards.
“Just having some fun with it,” he said.
Why did Trevor Zegras get a penalty for his jersey?
The league informed teams before the season that equipment rules would be enforced more strictly, covering neck guards, visors and helmets as well as jerseys. Players are required to start a shift with the sweater untucked, and the procedure runs warning first, then a minor, then a game misconduct. Zegras had been warned in the first period against Boston, which made the second offense automatic.
He had already responded on his own before the warmup protest. On Friday, Zegras posted two photos to Instagram of himself as a kid playing with his jersey tucked in, including one from his youth team, the Mid Fairfield Rangers. He followed it up with a picture of Tom Brady, a nod to the NFL’s own infamous tuck rule and the 2001 playoff call that went the Patriots’ way against the Raiders.

The reaction elsewhere in the league has been fairly relaxed. Leon Draisaitl said it wasn’t a big deal when he was asked about it, while noting that he’s been tucking his own jersey for years and will have to adjust.
Whether the NHL finds the protest as funny as the crowd did is another matter. It didn’t help Philadelphia much on the night either, as they lost 5-1 to the Capitals to fall to 1-3 in the preseason. Their regular season opens Wednesday at home against Pittsburgh.
