But he still does not have his name on the Stanley Cup. He and the Edmonton Oilers came close in 2024 and 2025 but fell short against the Florida Panthers both times. Most recently, the Oilers were eliminated by the Anaheim Ducks in six games in the first round. Connor McDavid signed a two-year extension with the Oilers through the 2027–28 season, but after the Oilers’ season ended, speculation began to run wild regarding his future with the team.
Appearing on the The Pat McAfee Show, Gretzky was asked what he thinks about Connor McDavid’s future.
“I honestly think, when I look at Connor and from talking with him, that he truly loves playing in Edmonton,” Gretzky said.

“I think that is a conversation you guys should have with Connor yourselves. I kind of like my statue in Edmonton, I don’t want to see it burned down,” Gretzky joked.
