John Tortorella is back in the NHL. Now, he responds to some criticism claiming he’s moving players around too much—and everyone is finding it absolutely hilarious.
In late March, the Vegas Golden Knights made a bold decision to let go of head coach Bruce Cassidy. Instead, they hired one of the most prolific coaches in the modern NHL era: John Tortorella. The decision came after the Golden Knights had won just one of their last seven games—but still, it’s not easy letting go of the coach who won the team its first-ever Stanley Cup championship.
John Tortorella hadn’t coached a team since he was fired by the Philadelphia Flyers in March 2025. As always, there are a lot of opinions about ‘Torts,’ with some absolutely loving him, and others who can barely stand him. But as the ninth-winningest coach in NHL history, it’s hard to find a more experienced guy on the bench than Tortorella. And he’s off to a flying start with his new team.
John Tortorella’s response
Tortorella won his first game in charge as the Golden Knights defeated the Vancouver Canucks. Right now, every win is important for the Golden Knights, who sit just five points ahead of the San Jose Sharks, who are just outside a playoff spot—but Vegas has also played two more games. No matter how it goes, NHL fans are thrilled that Tortorella is back, and he proved why during his post-practice media availability on Wednesday.

Tortorella was, for example, asked about his thoughts on moving struggling players around. Superstars like Mitch Marner have struggled, but Tortorella had an awesome response to those who criticize him for moving players around the lineup too much.
“I’ve been criticized many times for moving guys around too much and I really don’t give a shit,” he said, per a social media post from SinBin Vegas.
On social media, John Tortorella was praised for his straightforward response.
“The league is 100% more entertaining with this guy in it,” one said.
“Are you not entertained? Happy playoff Torts is back,” another said.
“Torts is Torts-ing,” a third said.
