Rasmus Dahlin is back with the Buffalo Sabres after spending time in Sweden, and he has now spoken publicly about his leave of absence.
Earlier this fall, Dahlin’s girlfriend, Carolina Matovac, 25, underwent a heart transplant after experiencing severe heart issues over the summer. Dahlin began the season with the Sabres, but in November he took a leave of absence to return to Sweden and support her.

Rasmus Dahlin speaks out
During Dahlin’s absence, the Sabres lost three straight games. Since his return, they’ve won two in a row, including a 5–1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers. Now, Dahlin has shared more about his time in Sweden and his girlfriend’s recovery.
Speaking to the Swedish outlet Expressen, Dahlin offered an update on Carolina’s condition.
“It’s hard to put into words what a warrior she is. She takes steps forward every day. She’s doing well. She keeps making progress, and she just gets better and better. It’s a long recovery journey—she’s lost an incredible amount of weight,” Dahlin said.
Support from the Sabres
He also spoke about the support he received from the Sabres organization.
“They understand my situation. Family and health come before sports, and they supported me in that. I’m incredibly, incredibly grateful,” Dahlin said.
Next up for the Sabres is a home game against the Calgary Flames.
